Should you take it?

  • Suits anyone who wants to write better prompts without technical or prompt-writing experience and has 4 hours to give it.
  • Not for people who already write prompts every day and want a technical or exam-based credential.
  • The catch: at 4 hours it's a short introduction, so treat the certificate as proof you finished rather than proof of skill.
  • Google AI Professional Certificate suits you better if you want a wider AI course than prompting alone, at 8 hours with no prerequisites.

Who is Google Prompting Essentials for?

People who already use AI tools at work and want better results from them. The Coursera page says you don't need any technical or prompt writing experience to start. The catch: it is a course certificate, not a proctored exam, and the same Coursera page gives two lengths, 4 hours to complete and under 10 hours.

Google Prompting Essentials or Google AI Essentials?

Take Prompting Essentials if you only want to write better prompts. Take Google AI Essentials if you want a wider start on using AI at work. It also lists $49 a month on Coursera.

Which prompting course or exam should you take?

Take Prompting Essentials for a Google certificate, or book an exam if you need a tested result.

  • You want a Google certificate on your profile: Prompting Essentials, on Coursera.
  • You want to try prompting free first: AI Foundations from OpenAI Academy, which covers giving clear instructions, providing context and checking responses: free, with a badge.
  • You prompt Copilot in Microsoft 365 and want an exam: AI Business Professional (AB-730), $99, a 45-minute exam. One of its domains is "Manage prompts and chats by using Microsoft 365 Copilot" (20 to 25%), and Microsoft expects a basic understanding of Microsoft 365.

The catch: neither course is a certification exam. AB-730 is, and Microsoft says it is proctored, so pick it if an employer wants a tested result.

How we chose

  • How to prepare: courses that name this certification, as each provider describes them, Google's own first.
