OpenAI's free three-hour AI Leadership course is a practical start: you draft an AI strategy and roadmap.
What do AI courses for managers focus on?
Less on how models work, more on decisions: which projects to back, how to prove value, how to keep people in the loop and when a pilot is ready to scale. A few also show you how AI agents work, so you can judge proposals from technical teams.
Which AI course should a busy manager take first?
AI Leadership from OpenAI Academy. It is free, 3 hours long and built around a real AI initiative: you connect it to business priorities and leave with a first strategy and roadmap. Score 80% or more on the assessment for a free badge.
The catch is its intermediate level. If AI is still new to you, AWS's Generative AI for Executives is free and under an hour, though AWS doesn't say whether it comes with a certificate.
What if you lead a department or a whole organization?
Microsoft's Drive AI transformation in your organization runs 1 day and is for directors, VPs and executives, with no technical expertise required. It prepares for the Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader certification and is free as three self-paced learning paths.
The AWS AI Business Strategist Learning Plan runs 14 hours 30 minutes across 13 trainings, for people who translate between executives and technical teams. It covers deciding what to fund, proving value and judging readiness to scale. AWS doesn't state the price.
Should managers learn about AI agents and people decisions?
If your teams are being pitched agents, yes. Vanderbilt's Agentic AI and AI Agents: A Primer for Leaders is a paid 6-hour course on how agents work and how to separate real value from hype, and you build basic agents with custom GPTs.
If AI touches hiring or performance reviews in your team, Wharton's AI Applications in People Management covers managing bias in algorithmic decisions. Wharton states 1 week to complete at 10 hours a week; it is free to start, with a paid certificate.
