Start with the free Elements of AI: Introduction to AI, which needs no programming and gives a free certificate on passing.

What should a beginner AI course cover?

Two things: how AI works, and how to use it on your own tasks. Some courses do one, some do both.

For understanding, Elements of AI: Introduction to AI from the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn covers what AI is and how it affects daily life, with only basic math needed. Generative AI for Everyone, Andrew Ng's 6-hour course, adds what generative AI can and can't do and the basics of prompting. It is free to start; the certificate is paid.

For using the tools, Google AI Essentials is a five-course beginner program with hands-on Gemini activities. It takes 4 hours and is paid.

Which beginner AI courses can you finish in an afternoon?

If you only do one short course, do AI Foundations: it practices the habits that matter most, such as giving context and checking answers.

Do you need to code to learn AI?

No. Most beginner AI courses teach you to use AI tools, and Elements of AI needs no programming at all. If you want to try coding, DeepLearning.AI's AI Python for Beginners teaches Python from scratch alongside AI tools, with small projects that call large language models. The course is free and 11.5 hours long, but its certificate isn't free.

Is a beginner AI certificate worth paying for?

Usually not at this stage. Free certificates are easy to find: Elements of AI gives one on passing, and Anthropic's Claude 101 gives a free certificate of completion for a starter course on using Claude at work. A completion certificate shows you finished a course rather than passed an exam, so treat it as a record for yourself or your manager. Pay for a certificate once you know which tool or field you want to go further in.
