For everyday work, OpenAI Academy's free AI Foundations takes 1 hour 10 minutes, with a badge for scoring 80% or more.

Which prompt engineering course is right for you?

Start with where your prompts will run. If you type into a chat tool at work, you need a course on briefing it well. If your prompts sit inside code, you need one that treats them as API calls you test.

Can you learn prompt engineering for free?

Yes. The free options run from a 1-hour PMI course to notebook tutorials. PMI's Talking to AI: Prompt Engineering for Project Managers takes 1 hour, covers prompt design, refinement and chaining, and adds 14 use-case videos and an 85-page workbook. It earns 3 PDUs and needs a free PMI account.

Anthropic's Prompt Engineering Interactive Tutorial walks through prompting techniques step by step in Jupyter notebooks. The material is free, but the catch is cost: you need an Anthropic API key and pay small API usage charges as you go. There is no certificate, and Anthropic doesn't say how long it takes.

Andrew Ng's AI Prompting for Everyone is for people who use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and covers deep research modes and handling sycophancy. You can audit it free; graded work and the certificate need Pro, at USD 25 a month billed yearly or USD 30 month to month.

What comes after a beginner prompting course?

Two directions. For repeat work, OpenAI Academy's Applied AI Foundations is intermediate level and takes 1 hour 20 minutes. It turns good prompts into workflows with checkpoints and human review, and weighs quality against speed and cost. Its badge, like the beginner course's, needs 80% on the assessment.

For builders, Anthropic's Building with the Claude API takes 10 hours over seven modules, including prompt evaluation, tool use and retrieval. Every feature is free, though it gives no certificate, and it expects basic Python and a notebook you can run on your own machine.

Is there a prompt engineering certification?

The Cisco AI Business Practitioner is offered as a free learning path with a digital badge. The GitHub Copilot certification costs $99 USD. A course can also leave you with a record to show: PMI's Talking to AI earns 3 PDUs, and both OpenAI Academy courses give a badge for 80% or more on the assessment.
