Anthropic's AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations and Elements of AI: Introduction to AI are both free, with free certificates.
What does an AI literacy course cover?
How AI tools reach an answer, where they go wrong, and how to use them with care at work. Anthropic's AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, built with academic partners, covers working with AI effectively, efficiently, ethically and safely, and ends with a final assessment for a free certificate. Also from Anthropic, AI Capabilities and Limitations, explains next-token prediction, working memory and steerability, so you can spot an odd output and fix the request. Both are beginner level and free, and Anthropic gives no length for either.
Which AI literacy course should you start with?
You have never studied AI:Elements of AI: Introduction to AI, from the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn, needs no programming, only basic math, and gives a free certificate when you pass. Its length isn't stated.
You use ChatGPT at work: OpenAI Academy's AI Foundations takes 1 hour 10 minutes and covers clear instructions, context and checking responses. Score 80% or more on the assessment for a free badge.
You have under an hour: Google's Introduction to Generative AI is a 45-minute module on how generative AI differs from traditional machine learning, with a free badge.
You want a longer overview from Andrew Ng:AI For Everyone from DeepLearning.AI takes 7 hours and covers machine learning, data science and spotting AI opportunities in an organization. Enrolling is free; the shareable certificate is paid.
Is a paid AI literacy course worth it?
Pay for the practice, not the hours. Google AI Essentials takes 4 hours, shorter than AI For Everyone, and you pay for hands-on Gemini activities and a Google certificate: USD 49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial. DataCamp's Understanding Artificial Intelligence is a 2-hour no-code course with 16 videos and 49 exercises; it is free to start, full access needs a DataCamp subscription, and a qualified assessment earns 2.8 CPE credits. If you only want to understand AI, Elements of AI, AI Fluency and AI Foundations give a certificate or badge without a fee.
Is there an AI literacy certification?
OpenAI's AI Foundations certification is a pilot "available only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces on an invite-only basis", so most people can't book it. An exam you can book yourself is AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01), USD 100 for 90 minutes and 65 questions on AI, machine learning and generative AI concepts on AWS. The 8-hour AWS Artificial Intelligence Practitioner Learning Plan prepares for it; the exam is a separate purchase. Microsoft's Azure AI Fundamentals (Exam AI-901) is entry level too, but 55 to 60% of it is building with Microsoft Foundry.
