If you don't code, Anthropic's free AI Capabilities and Limitations explains how large language models behave.
Do you want to understand LLMs or build with them? The two need different courses. AI Capabilities and Limitations covers next-token prediction, working memory and steerability with a free certificate, though Anthropic doesn't state a length. OpenAI's ChatGPT fundamentals is a short written guide rather than a course, free and without a certificate.
To build, the LLM Course is 12 chapters, intermediate level, and Hugging Face says "Each chapter in this course is designed to be completed in 1 week, with approximately 6-8 hours of work per week". The catch: it gives no certificate. For a quicker first build on an open model, DeepLearning.AI's Building with Llama 4 takes 1 hour 20 minutes, is free to start and ends with a graded assignment.
What should you know before an LLM course? Python, for anything hands-on. If you are new to it, AI Python for Beginners teaches Python from scratch with small projects that call LLMs, in 11 hours 30 minutes. It is free to take; the certificate isn't free. Harvard's CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python is free with a free certificate and covers neural networks and language models over "seven weeks of material".
