You code in Python and want to ship LLM features: Building with the Claude API from Anthropic Academy has seven modules on API basics, prompt evaluation, tool use, RAG and agentic workflows, with 14 assignments. It expects basic Python and gives no certificate.You want the machine learning foundations first: the Machine Learning Specialization from Stanford Online and DeepLearning.AI covers supervised and unsupervised learning with Python, scikit-learn and TensorFlow labs. It is paid; the stated pace is 2 months at 10 hours a week.You would rather start from working code: fast.ai's Practical Deep Learning for Coders is free and example-first, using PyTorch, fastai and Hugging Face. It has 9 lessons, and each lesson is around 90 minutes long. fast.ai doesn't say whether there's a certificate.Can you learn AI engineering for free? Yes. CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python from Harvard covers search, uncertainty, neural networks and language models through Python projects, over seven weeks of material, with a free certificate. For agents, Hugging Face's AI Agents Course covers smolagents, LangGraph and LlamaIndex and offers two free certificate tiers. LangChain Academy's Introduction to LangChain - Python is free too, and it is one of the prerequisite courses for the LangChain Certified Agent Engineer exam.
Is a long professional certificate worth the time? It can be if you want one structured path. IBM's IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate spans scikit-learn, Spark, Keras, PyTorch and TensorFlow through to LLM and RAG applications, at intermediate level. IBM states 4 months at 10 hours a week. The catch: it is billed by subscription, so check the monthly price against that pace before you start.
