Which generative AI course fits what you want to do?
Generative AI courses split three ways, and the right one depends on whether you will use the tools, decide on them or build with them.
- Use it in your own work: Generative AI for Everyone with Andrew Ng takes 6 hours and covers what the technology can and cannot do, plus prompting basics. It is free to start; the certificate isn't free. On Microsoft 365, Build foundational generative AI skills is free with a free badge and centers on Copilot Chat.
- Decide where it fits in your organization: AWS's Generative AI for Executives is free and takes 50 minutes.
- Build applications: Building with the Claude API covers prompt evaluation, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation and agentic workflows, with 14 assignments. It expects basic Python, and there is no certificate.
Do you need to code for a generative AI course?
No, for the user and leader courses. Yes, for anything that builds apps. If you want a long, guided route from the basics to fine-tuning, RAG and LangChain, the IBM Generative AI Engineering Professional Certificate is a paid subscription that Coursera gives as "6 months at 6 hours a week". It starts at beginner level and ends with a guided project. Already building on AWS? The AWS Generative AI Developer Advanced Learning Plan is advanced, with labs, and takes 45 hours 20 minutes. AWS doesn't state its price.
Are there generative AI courses for your job?
Yes, and they are often the quicker win, because the examples match your work. Project managers can take PMI's Generative AI Overview for Project Managers, free and 1 hour long, with a free certificate. Marketers have Microsoft's Generative AI for Marketers Specialization, paid, given as "4 weeks to complete at 5 hours a week". Role courses go less deep on how the models work, so pair one with a general course if you want the background.
Which generative AI certifications can you take?
For an exam with a vendor name on it, the Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate costs $200 and is associate level. Databricks also lists Generative AI Fundamentals as free on-demand training. Teachers can look at Google's Gemini Certified Educator, free of charge. A course certificate shows you finished a course; a certification means you passed an exam.
